Stillbirths are registered with the Registrar of Births and Deaths.
When to register a stillbirth
We recommend for you to register the birth of a stillborn baby within 3 months of the date of the birth.
Where to register a stillbirth
A stillborn baby must be registered, when stillborn at 24 weeks and over, with the Registrar of Births and Deaths for the district where the Stillbirth occurred.
Stillbirth registrations take place by appointment at three locations across the borough.
To make an appointment please contact Barnsley Register Office
If you prefer, you can go to any other registrar's office in England and Wales to give the details of the Stillborn baby, but the birth will not be registered there. The details will be forwarded by post to the registrar for the district where the baby was stillborn and he/she will complete the registration from the information you have supplied. This is called registering a stillbirth by declaration.
Once the baby has been registered the registrar will issue a short birth certificate free of charge. If you require a full birth certificate (showing parents' names) ask the registrar. see a list of our current fees and charges.
Who can register a stillbirth?
If both parents are married to each other when the baby is born, either of you may register the stillbirth.
If you are not married, and want the father's details to be included in the register, you should both attend the Register Office together. If it is not possible for both of you to attend, contact us for advice about what to do. You can add the father's details at a later date.
What information do I need to bring with me?
We will tell you what you need to bring with you when the appointment is made. Appointments outside normal office hours may be available. Please contact the Register Office for details.
