Recycling in Barnsley

Find out what you can do to help the environment and how we can work together to manage your waste.

New recycling guide - 1 March 2014

Please place all Christmas wrapping paper in your grey bin as most types of wrapping paper are not suitable for recycling

If you've recently moved to a new home in Barnsley and you haven't got any waste and recycling bins or containers, you'll need:

  • grey bin for general waste
  • green bin for garden waste
  • blue bin for cardboard
  • brown bin for cans glass bottles/jars and plastic bottles
  • white bag for paper

You must register with council tax before requesting a waste collection.

You can then:

You can collect your bins free of charge from our depot at Smithies Lane, Barnsley, S71 1NL, between 9am and 3pm Monday to Friday.

Each year we’ll send you an up to date recycling information leaflet and collection calendar. This should give you all the information you may need to help you recycle. If you haven't received one or you want to ask anything else you can email us at and we’ll do our best to help you.

Our exhibition van travels around the area giving you the chance to talk to someone face to face and ask questions about your recycling needs. You’ll usually find our van during National Recycling Week in June every year, at places like supermarket car parks, markets or open air events

If you like, we can visit you at home to discuss any questions you have about recycling.

You may see us knocking on doors in areas where residents don’t recycle much. By doing this we can let everyone know what they need to do and make sure they have everything they need to be able to recycle.

You can find more information and legislation on recycling in the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and Household Waste Recycling Act 2003.
